Acclimatization
Pare Mountains
Teams will have an opportunity to stay in local villages, experiencing Pare culture, while trekking through these attractive mountains. There are great views of Mt. Kilimanjaro, as well as Lake Jipe and Lake Nyumba ya Mungu. Acclimatisation treks will take you through cultivated areas and natural vegetation.
Usambara Mountains
Rising above the coastal plains north of Dar es Salaam, this area offers a dramatic contrast to the surrounding savannah. The Usambara Mountains are topped with natural forest and there are many villages scattered across the range. This is a beautiful and unspoilt area with stunning viewpoints and interesting walks.
Longido Mountain
An excellent preparation for the main challenge, ascending through dense bush the summit is a peak of bare rock with fantastic views of the Rift Valley, Mt. Meru, Mt. Kilimanjaro and into Kenya. There may also be opportunities to meet the Maasai people of the area.
Monduli Mountains
Situated North West of Arusha this area offers fantastic views over the Rift Valley plains and some great acclimatisation trekking areas. Again, there are also opportunities to experience the wonders of the traditional Maasai way of life.
Main Trekking phase
Mt. Meru
Often described as the “real” mountain of Tanzania, Mt. Meru stands at 4,560m/14,956ft and presents an exciting challenge for an adventurous team. Walking through four different vegetation zones in Arusha National Park, the beginning of the trek gives fantastic opportunities to see every type of game.
Projects
Previous World Challenge teams have been able to work on many fulfilling projects that are greatly appreciated by the local communities. Examples include helping to provide a water supply to a primary school, renovating a kitchen and painting classrooms. The project is a great chance to interact with local people and experience first hand the culture of Tanzania and a different way of life.
Rest and Relaxation
Tanzania is famous for its white sandy beaches and laid-back atmosphere. Teams may be able to snorkel and swim in the Indian Ocean while relaxing in coastal towns such as Pangani. In Tanzania there are a large number of places in which to choose your safari. Most offer a good chance of seeing some of the African "Big Five" - i.e. elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo, in addition to several hundred other species.
I've learned loads on this trip; from how much I take even the most basic things forgranted, to how to manage my money and belongings. This was a trip that can never be repeated in the same way, it was amazing and I wouldn't change anything.![]()
Helen O'Higgins - Challenger
The entire month has been a fantastic experience. The culture has definitely had an impact on me and even now, as I write this at 2am in Dubai airport, there are still people smiling! Challenging but amazing.![]()
Thandi House - Challenger
A fantastic lifetime achievement to visit and climb in this country. So many different and varied experiences condensed into a month. The Challengers were amazing – I am so very, very proud of all of their achievements on each phase. When all 13 of us reached the Uhuru Peak – well, I was left speechless!![]()
