Introduction to the Tanzania South expedition

Tanzania is rich in culture and its greatest wealth lies in its outstanding attractions in terms of wildlife, the tropical coastline and islands and its vast expanses of wilderness. All these features provide for a challenging and exciting expedition destination. This is a side of Tanzania that many people never see as many visitors venture to the north of the country. The south is far less developed and therefore more of an adventure for a team with a spirit of adventure. You will have access to some of the best game parks in Africa and have the opportunity to carry out project work in an area that has been neglected for many years.

Amidst the lush green forest and beautiful mountains, there are many different communities and distinct cultures. Teams visiting the south are struck by the friendly welcome extended to them, something precious in an area just beginning to embrace tourism. Africa has an undeniable romance endearing travellers to return repeatedly to experience its unique magic; southern Tanzania is a fantastic place to start!

Tanzania South expedition itinerary

Some possible expedition objectives are given below, please note these may alter between now and your expedition. The Expedition Program Manager for Tanzania will design an expedition itinerary for you, to best match the abilities and aspirations of your team.

Acclimatization
Trekking Udzungwa Mountains
The Udzungwa Mountains National Park is an area of dense tropical forest, rich in bird and plant life and home to many different species of monkey. Luhombero Plateau and Mwanihana Peak offer challenging climbs and trails through the rainforest, taking in waterfalls along the route.

Uluguru Mountains
These beautiful mountains rise to about 2600m from mainly grassland on the lower slopes to thick montane rainforest rich in plant and animal life on the higher reaches. The local people are keen to channel money into conservation projects within this unique environment.

Main Trekking phase
Livingstone Mountains
These are the most remote mountains in the Mbeya region as there are few roads passing through towards the eastern shore of Lake Nyasa. Trekking in this area will take you through stunning scenery, featuring plateaus, waterfalls and small villages. You may also be able to visit the nearby Ngozi Crater Lake. This lies in the collapsed crater of an extinct volcano where teams might choose to camp and catch the sunshine.

Projects
Many World Challenge teams have been able to work on fulfilling projects, which are greatly appreciated by the local communities. Examples of previous works have been providing a water supply to an elementary school, light construction work and  renovating and painting classrooms. Working with the Ministry of Education in Iringa and local agents in Mbeya and Mtwara, there are endless opportunities for meaningful project work and cultural exchange.

Rest and Relaxation
Safari - Ruaha National Park or Mikumi National Park
An expedition to Tanzania would not be complete without a safari. Both parks offer fantastic opportunities to view the African "Big Five": elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo, in addition to several hundred other species.

Coast
Tanzania is famous for its white sandy beaches and laid-back atmosphere. Teams can snorkel and swim in the Indian Ocean whilst relaxing in coastal towns such as Bagamoyo. Alternatively Mikindani, on the south eastern coast, is a hidden gem with elaborate Arab style buildings, white sand beaches and the warm Indian Ocean. This could be combined with an exploration of the ancient ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani on the return journey to Dar es Salaam.

I have found this trip amazing. It's been one of the best experiences of my life and even if I come back to Tanzania again, my experience will never be as good as this trip.
