| China is one of Asia’s most exotic and compelling destinations. Situated in eastern Asia, bounded by the Pacific Ocean in the east and the Tibetan plateau in the west, China is the third largest country in the world and is a country of rich cultural heritage, spectacular scenery and great contrast. More accessible than ever before, visitors join the few westerners who have experienced both the modern and ancient faces of this alluring destination. |

Known as the ‘Middle Kingdom’, China has a long and dramatic history and offers an endless diversity of cultural treasures. It is likely that the expedition will follow a route from the splendors of Beijing in the north of China to the east and west fusion of Hong Kong in the south, with the option of going north to south or vice versa. Teams will head to the former imperial capital of Xi’an, home to the Terracotta Warriors. The province of Sichuan in south west China will be the starting point of the team’s main trekking. Sichuan offers beautiful mountainous regions, snow capped peaks, jade green lakes, sacred mountains and lush forest. The beautiful rice terraced landscapes of Guilin and Yangshuo in Guangxi can also be explored, discovering village life in its traditional form.
Due to the huge scale of the country and to meet the itinerary objectives, teams should be prepared to travel on various forms of transport for long periods of time, from overnight train to local Chinese boat.

Some possible expedition objectives are given below, please note these may alter between now and your expedition. The Expedition Program Manager for China will agree a suitable expedition itinerary for you to best match the abilities and aspirations of your team.
Trekking Phase
Sichuan Province- The Tagong Grasslands
Sichuan is the largest province in south west China with its own food, dialect and unique character. The team will have the opportunity to travel a spectacular scenic route from Chengdu to the village of Tagong. The Tagong Grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau offer the chance to trek at altitude in the shadow of Jola Shan, a sacred, snow capped Tibetan Buddhist Mountain.
Emei Shan/Hua Shan
These short 2 day treks take the team up some of China’s most famous sacred mountains. Often following a procession of pilgrims, the team will pass monasteries, temples and numerous views of remarkable scenery, with the objective of witnessing a sunrise or sunset at either summit.
Guangxi Province
China’s most beautiful province offers some lovely trails through its picturesque surroundings. The team will be able to explore the region around Yangshuo with its green hills, limestone karst peaks, fantastic caves and crystal clear waters of the Li River. Trekking through the magnificent rice terraces of the Dragon’s Backbone in Longsheng will be a highlight.
Projects
Project opportunities are likely to include work with schools and orphanages, as well as conservation work and community projects in small villages.
Rest and Relaxation
Depending on whether the team flies out of Beijing or Hong Kong, they may choose to spend some time visiting places of cultural interest. Both these vibrant cities have a lot to offer. A visit to the Great Wall of China and The Forbidden City in Beijing is a must along with Temple Street night market and crossing Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong on the famous Star Ferry.
