Peru - South
Introduction to the Peru South expedition |
|
| Peru sits on the Pacific coast of South America and features three main environments: the vast Amazonian lowlands, the Andes Mountains and a narrow strip of coastal plain which runs down the west of the country. Each of these environments has its own distinct climate and during a four-week expedition it is common to experience a range of different conditions - from the heat and humidity of the jungle to below freezing temperatures in the Andes.
Peruvians tend to be very warm-hearted and take pride in welcoming visitors into their communities so teams are encouraged to make the most of the opportunities for cultural exchange. |

Some possible expedition objectives are given below, please note these may alter between now and your expedition. The Expedition Program Manager for Southern Peru will design an expedition itinerary for you to best match the abilities and aspirations of your team.
Acclimitization
From Lima, teams can either head south towards Arequipa to complete a variety of different acclimatization treks, or they can head east to Cusco where there are many of options, including treks to the ruins and markets of the Sacred Valley.
Main Trekking phase
Arequipa and Cusco
There are a wealth of trekking opportunities based around the beautiful colonial towns of Arequipa and Cusco. In Arequipa, teams could opt for a trek in the Colca Canyon, which is twice the depth of the Grand Canyon or in the more remote Cotahuasi Canyon, which is reportedly the deepest canyon in the world. Those looking for a greater challenge may want to attempt a volcano trek.
Near Cusco, teams can trek to Machu Picchu, the famous ‘Lost City of the Incas’, on a beautiful and challenging alternative to the Inca Trail. Even further off the beaten track, there are remote ruins deep in the heart of the Sacred Valley and mountain treks in the nearby Cordillera Vilcanota. These longer and more adventurous treks allow teams to explore the heart of rural Peru.
Projects
During this phase, teams have the opportunity to learn about the Peruvian way of life, experiencing local culture and customs at first hand. Projects could include helping villages to construct or renovate community buildings and facilities, painting murals, establishing recycling systems or planting trees.
Rest and Relaxation
During an expedition to Southern Peru there are a variety of opportunities en route for rest and relaxation. Peru contains many fascinating cultural sites including ancient ruins and colorful local markets. Teams can also spend time on Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, fly over the famous Nasca lines or visit the Paracas Peninsular and Ballestas islands which are home to a great variety of wildlife. Adventurous teams could also choose to take part in a White-water rafting trip or a boat trip into the Amazon at the Pongo de Manique.
This trip made me realise that if I put my mind to something, I can achieve it.![]()
