Expedition Safety

Our programs are about learning though experience, but never at the expense of safety. Safety is WCE's top priority and its comprehensive, unrivalled safety and support procedures are made possible through experience, systems, contacts and resources built up over the past 21 years running overseas expeditions.

The priority we place on safety and our world-class systems means that students and teachers can look forward to a rewarding, safe and well-managed experience.

When it comes to training, safety and support, WCE spares no effort and no expense. Extensive training procedures for Expedition Leaders, School Leaders, Challengers and World Challenge staff alike means we are prepared for every eventuality. It also enables us to provide the highest level of operational support possible and continually review and improve our established procedures.

Safety in the field

A safe expedition starts with a good Expedition Leader. Our Leaders are professional outdoor instructors with extensive expedition training.  All have completed first aid training, police screening, and our rigorous training course as a minimum, have experience of working with young people and have relevant mountain, jungle or desert experience.

Advance preparation and an extensive network of resources support Expedition Leaders and keep participants safe on expedition. All teams carry top of the line equipment including comprehensive medical kits, satellite phones and satellite beacons.

Safety behind the scenes

World Challenge takes full responsibility for the safety of each expedition, ensuring plenty of back ground support. We operate a 24-hour Operations Room as a support resource for each team and to manage unexpected events from a lost passport to a helicopter evacuation in the case of a medical emergency. World Challenge also invests in extensive emergency resources for all teams such as First Assist (which has access to a network of emergency evacuation facilities and screened blood) and Royal & Sun Alliance. While traveling, each participant is insured up to 3 million dollars for medical care.

In addition...

We have a close working relationship with numerous agencies, US Embassies, High Commissions, Foreign and Commonwealth Offices. Diplomatic missions operating in the expedition destination are made aware of World Challenge activities so they can provide help and support if necessary. Our Air Travel Organizer’s License (ATOL) provides further protection for all participants. While we have an excellent safety record and serious incidents are highly unlikely, we are proud to offer a level of back-up support unmatched by any other provider.
